Professor Shailesh V. Shrikhande is Deputy Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

He is also Chief of Cancer Surgery and GI & HPB Surgical Service. He is one of the few surgeons worldwide to have successfully performed over 1200 Whipple operations. He has conducted over 60 live Operative teaching demonstrations of pancreatic, gastric, colorectal and gall bladder cancer surgeries across India.  He is the Past President of the Indian Chapter of International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA). He is also the President of the Asia Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA) and also Secretary General Elect of the IHPBA. In recognition of his work on digestive cancer surgery in India, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2014 (FRCS – Ad Eundem). In 2021, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship of American Surgical Association (ASA). He is the first Indian cancer surgeon and only the second Indian ever to receive this prestigious honour in the last 144 years of the world oldest surgical association.

Surgical specialization is exclusively in digestive cancer surgery and includes stomach cancer surgery, pancreatic cancer surgery, liver cancer surgery, gall bladder cancer surgery, bile duct cancer surgery, small and large intestine cancer surgery including rectal cancer surgery.

Administrative Experience

  1. Leading the new TMC hospital building project, a state-of-the-art 550-bed futuristic cancer care facility in service of the nation. On 11th May, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India dedicated this project to the nation.
  2. Completed the project of Doctors’ & Nurses’ housing and Dharamshala for poor patients.
  3. Under his social initiative leadership, MHADA awarded 100 flats to poor patients and relatives.
  4. Driving Tata Memorial Centre’s Technical Collaboration with Goa Medical College, JITO Cancer Centre in Thane and JSW Sanjeevani Hospital, Dolvi in Raigad District.
  5. Awarded a full scholarship by Tata Trusts for healthcare administration at Harvard (2020-22).
